CERTIFICATE IN THE WELFARE OF ANIMALS DURING TRANSPORT

From 1st May 2008 anybody transporting animals (sheep, cattle, goats, pigs, birds or horses) over 60km (45 miles) for commercial purposes or gain must pass an assessment to receive a Certificate of Competence. This will include a wide range of people including farmers, hauliers, trainers, dealers etc. The assessment can be either paper or computer based and will involve 25 generic questions and then 5 further questions for each species you would like to cover. The qualification covers fitness to travel, means of transport, use of facilities, loading, unloading, handling, watering, feeding intervals, journey times, rest periods, space allowance and documentation.There are two seperate assessments for those travelling under and over 8 hours (includes a practical assessment).

Cost is £50 + VAT and this includes up to 5 species
