EMERGENCY FIRST AID AT WORK
As of 1st October 2009 a number of changes are taking place. First Aid at Work will now be a 3 day course which will still incorporate a practical end test. Certificates will be valid for 3 years. Emergency First Aid at Work will be a one day course and can only be accessed vis HSE approved providers. Certificates will be valid for 3 years. Annual Refresher Basic Training will be recommended by the HSE (half day duration) during the interim period between initial qualification and requalification.

This one day course covers:
- Assessing situations and taking appropriate action, including informing emergency services
- Artificial ventilations and chest compressions
- Recovery Position
- Clearing obstructed airways
- Controlling severe bleeding
- Recognising and treating shock
- Requirements of a first aid kit
- Reporting accidents in the work place
- Head injuries
- Major illnesses
- Burns, scalds, poisons and fractures
- Chemical contamination
The following guidelines are issued for high risk industries
Fewer than 5 staff (on one site) - At least one appointed person
5 - 50 staff (on one site) - At least one first aider.
An appointed person takes charge of first aid arrangements, including looking after the equipment and facilities and calling the emergency services when required. (one day course)
A First Aider must hold a valid certificate of competence in First Aid At Work, issued by an organisation whose training and qualifications are approved by HSE (four day course)
If it is more that three years since you have done a course, you should consider doing another one.
HOW TO MAKE & MANAGE RISK ASSESSMENTS
This one-day course will include:
- Implement the broad requirements of health and safety legislation in regard to risk assessment
- Identify where in your business assessment of risk is needed
- Carry out and review risk assessment
- Decide what information needs to be recorded and how
- Decide what training and supervision will be needed
- Create a personal action plan
