CHAINSAW Update

As of 1st April 2003 significant changes have occurred with regard to all levels of Chainsaw Training & Certification. Firstly all Chainsaw users have been divided into two categories "Occasional Users" or "Professional Users".

Definitions –

Occasional Users: "someone who intends to use the chainsaw for business, domestic or leisure purposes, but does not intend to work in forestry or arboricultural activities or work on Forest Enterprise land, or fell material above 200mm (8") in diameter."
Professional Users: "someone who anticipates seeking contractual work in professional forestry, amenity or utility arboriculture activities which is likely immediately, or at some future date, to involve felling trees over 200mm (8") and/or aerial tree work"
Occasional Users will still be able to do the Integrated Training & Assessment award for the basic skills of maintenance, cross cutting and felling standing material up to 200mm.
Professional users will still be able to do their training through Lantra, but will then have to be independently assessed for an NPTC award.

Both the ITA and the independently assessed qualification will be jointly badged by the two awarding bodies to give a single identity to qualifications and awards for the use of chainsaws

CHAINSAW Training

Used correctly, chainsaws and allied cutting equipment are very versatile tools with a variety of uses. But they are potentially very dangerous. Serious accidents can and do occur without proper training, or because operators have not kept their skills up to scratch.

Most of our courses provide both training and assessment, so that at the end of the course you know whether you have reached the Lantra Awards standard

Dealing With Individual Windblown Trees

Trainees MUST previously have passed assessment for chainsaw maintenance, cross-cutting and felling small and medium trees.

The regulations and safety requirements relating to the use of chainsaw
Assessing lying, windblown and broken timber and deciding on appropriate action.
Cutting windblown trees using appropriate techniques
Operating a winch to control movement of root plates

VERMIN CONTROL COURSES

These courses are designed to help trainees plan & carry out vermin control. they are intended to give trainees a full working knowledge of both preventative and curative methods so that they can plan, implement and monitor a control programme appropriate to their situation.

These courses can be adjusted to the standard of the trainees present and will include the following, depending on standard - Health and Safety, simple butt welds, fillet and open corner welds in the down hand, horizontal and vertical positions, controlling distortion, welding thin walled pipes and applying hard facing deposits.

MIG
13th March
In this course Health and Safety aspects are covered. Trainees learn how to prepare the welder for use, carryout butt and fillet welds in down hand, vertical up and vertical down positions.

DRYSTONE DYKING
On this two day course trainees will learn how to maintain walling tools, select and sort stone, and undertake basic construction. Safety procedures are also covered.

STRAINED WIRE FENCING
On this two day course trainees will learn how to plan the fence line, estimate the quantity of material required, construct and erect suitable strainers, turning and contour posts, then erect and strain different types of wire correctly. Trainees will also understand how to plan the fencing operation so it is undertaken efficiently.
